WHAT A BIKE!
The first all new Ducati Monster since the Monster 900 was launched as a 1993 model in Europe, the 696 is loaded with the latest Ducati Corse and Superbike technology, while maintaining the elegant design and air-cooled simplicity of the original. The 696 has been under development for some time. See Technical Talk below for more info.PRICING
Canadian MSRP of the 2009 Monster 696 has just been announced at $9,995 CDN. How does that compare to previous Monster's of the past, considering horsepower and features? In summary, the 2009 Monster 696 is the best 600cc/750cc/800cc class Monster ever produced. The most HP, the most features, the best brakes with improved ergos. And at $9,995 CDN MSRP, the 696 is nearly $5,000 less than the 74HP - 1999 Monster 900.
CROSS BORDER PRICING
Heck, if you're reading this website, you've probably checked US prices for the 2009 Monster 696 as well, so let's call it the way it is:- The 2009 M696 is $500 less than the 1999 M750Dark was 10 years ago in Canada (‘99 M750D $9,995 CDN vs. '09 M696 $9,995 CDN)
- The 1999 M750D retailed for $5,995 in the US. The Canadian model was 66% more than the US model in 1999 at $9,995 CDN.
- The 2009 M696 is only 11% more in Canada than the US model (2009 M696 $8,495 USD vs $9,995 CDN).
- Very few motorcycle manufacturers can match this kind of price adjustment over the past decade. While the US version of the smallest displacement Urban Monster has increased +42% in the US over the 10 year period, the Canadian version has gone down in price during the same time by 5%.
TECH TALK
- - The 696 engine is based on the proven 2007-2008 M695, 2002-2006 M620 and 1997-2001 M600 Desmodue air-cooled, Single Overhead Cam (SOHC), 2-valve per cylinder engine first introduced in the mid-1990's for the European market as the M750 and M600. Arguably the 1980 500 Pantah model started the production run of this proven design 29 model years ago! In updating the 696 for Euro 3 standards and the future, this engine now has all new cylinder heads, cams and pistons bringing the horsepower up to 80HP. HP has gained 9% over the 695, now 80HP vs. 73HP. Torque is up as well, 11% vs the 695.
- – Seimens brand fuel injection updates the EFI, again for Euro 3 compliance and smooth operation.
- – The APTC semi-slipper clutch continues on the 696 from the M695 and M800 (now discontinued) Monster models. While not a slipper clutch for racing, this design helps novice riders with down shifts and smoother riding.
- – The Monster 696 features the same type of braking system as the 848 Superbike. You read that correctly. Dual Brembo 4-piston radial design calipers with 320mm rotors stop this little Monster with road racing ability.
- – Showa 43mm inverted forks replace Marzocchi.
- – Steel? Nope, similar to the Corse derived alloy swingarm for the 999R (can you say Troy Bayliss?) the 696 rear end components match the superb front end parts of this bike.
- – Modern digital with speedo, tach, clock, lap timer, immobilizer and fuel gauge SEATING POSITION - Unchanged for 15 years, the new Monster places the rider a bit farther forward for handling dynamics, with a shorter reach to the bars. The footpegs have been relocated for increased comfort as well.
- – The new trellis frame uses larger O.D., thinner wall tubing like the 1098/848 Superbike models with an alloy rear subframe for lighter weight. This combines the traditional art of a Ducati trellis frame with a Ducati Corse derived bolt-on subframe design from the Desmosedici GP race bike.
- – Nope. The 90 degree L-twin engine is nearly electric motor smooth allowing the engine to be a stressed member of the frame, solidly mounted just like all Ducatis. Why do Ducatis handle so well and win so many World Championships? It starts right here, with a narrow engine/frame package.
- – Fully 7kg lighter than the Monster 695 the Monster 696 weighs 355lbs / 161kg dry.
- – New Triple-Arc headlight and LED taillight
- – Unlike the Monster 695, the 696 comes standard in Canada with a bikini fairing and seat cowl (basically a $1,000 value) included as standard equipment.
- – The 696 maintains the traditional Monster silhouette we've grown to love
- – Standard 2 year warranty with no kilometer limits, plus the Ducati North America EverRed service contract extension to 4 years is available for $1,000.
- - We're not talking about a 1950s black and white movie here, the Ducati Monster is one of the few motorcycles produced today that has its own following; meaning, many owners have bought multiple Monster's over the years, replacing an older bike with the increased performance and/or style in a newer Monster. One might ask themselves why owners are dedicated to the bike. A test ride this spring at DucatiToronto will answer that question.
- – We're now taking orders at DucatiToronto / Rev Cycles at 580 Front St in downtown Toronto (corner of Front and Bathurst). $500 down for now. 100% refundable in May when the first 696's arrive. If you change your mind at that time, we'll refund your deposit 100% in cash back in May. If you love the bike, we'll have one waiting for you.
- – During the wait to the May-August delivery period, we can assist you with a loan through GE Money or Laurentian Bank with no "funny" hidden clauses or disclaimers.
